Hoping for a Perfect Weekend for Grilling

Pineapple Chicken Kebabs

I love this time of year. It stays light later. The mosquitoes aren’t out in full force yet. The days are often warm and it cools off to perfect sleeping temperatures at night.

All this has me in the mood to do some grilling. So I checked out the weekend forecast and I’m headed to the store to get my supplies. I also checked out the Health eCooking pages on our website for some fresh ideas.

Right off the bat, I found a recipe I want to try this weekend: Chicken and Pineapple Kababs. Sounds pretty good, right? I thought so, and I’m really excited about the mix of spices – hot (it has both cayenne pepper and chili powder) with sweet (the pineapple and some honey added to the marinade).

Here’s the other thing that really appeals to me. The recipe is heart healthy, gluten free, and is good for people with diabetes. And if you, or someone you’re cooking for, has a health condition that requires any of these preparations, the Health eCooking pages enables you to search for recipes by those three categories.

Preventing Urinary Tract Infections

Three Young Women

If you’ve ever experienced a urinary tract infection (UTI) or recurrent UTIs in particular, you know these common bacterial infections can be disruptive, frustrating and sometimes painful.

While women are more prone to UTIs, men get them too, often because of an obstruction. For women, however, the lifetime risk of developing a UTI is about 50 percent. Many women develop frequent or recurrent infections defined as two in 6 months or three or more in a year.

My colleague Jennifer DeLeo wrote an article on UTIs for the April/May issue of Keep In Touch With Jefferson – our e-newsletter. Read "Understanding and Preventing Urinary Tract Infections" to get tips on preventing UTIs and a better understanding of these  frustrating problems that sometimes require hospital care.

Sign up for Keep In Touch to learn about events and free health screenings and for feature articles about innovative programs and treatments available at Jefferson as well as timely information such as health tips and recipes.

Jefferson Nurses Celebrate Health Awareness and Service

NICU JHN

Jefferson nurses travel throughout our community and across the globe providing health care services to those in need and promoting health awareness.

During National Nurses Week 2012, nursing units across Jefferson University Hospitals participated in a “Travel Around the Globe Celebration,” competing to create a theme that highlighted their community service activities.

Across the Hospitals, nurses creatively spotlighted places with lunch parties featuring foods and creative decorations. The goals were to have fun and demonstrate that every interaction Jefferson nurses have here at home, or far away, reflects the high personal and professional values they all share. They competed for prizes: a unit pizza party, Philly pretzel treats, and a gourmet cookie tray.

Check out the winners in the full post.
