Benny Weksler, MD, an accomplished thoracic surgeon at Jefferson, was featured in an ABC 6 special report about new acid reflux treatments available in Philadelphia.
In the segment, Dr. Weksler discusses how he uses a process called ELF, short for endoluminal fundoplication, to treat acid reflux. This incisionless surgical treatment option involves inserting an endoscopic device through the mouth and into the stomach to access and reconstruct the gastroesophageal valve, thereby preventing reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus and throat. The procedure is performed with the patient under general anesthesia and typically takes less than an hour to complete.
Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is the first hospital in Philadelphia, and the Delaware Valley, to offer ELF.
