Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience was the first in the Delaware Valley to offer such state-of-the-art technologies as fractionated stereotactic radiosurgery (also known as stereotactic radiotherapy); Gamma Knife; Shaped Beam Surgery™; minimally invasive neurosurgery utilizing a robotically controlled microscope; and NeuRx DPS™, an FDA-approved device that helps individuals with certain types of spinal cord injuries breathe on their own again.

In addition, Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience has launched Jefferson Expert Teleconsulting (JET), the region's first university-based high-tech mobile robotic system to treat time-sensitive neurovascular diseases including arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), brain aneurysms and stroke. Through JET, you can receive sophisticated medical care without having to travel long distances. When a Jefferson specialist on call uses a laptop to connect to the remote hospital you are at via the robot, our specialist is able to obtain a medical history by speaking directly with you and/or family members, examine you and determine what therapy is immediately needed, in real time, without delay. A decision is then made either to admit you to your local hospital's critical care unit or transfer you to the Jefferson Acute Stroke Center.

• Physicians of the Division of Neurovascular Surgery and Endovascular Neurosurgery offer a comprehensive array of treatments for cerebrovascular disease. Some of these procedures are minimally invasive or noninvasive, which reduces risk for all patients and, in particular, provides options to those patients who cannot withstand the rigors of open surgery.
• The Jefferson Brain Aneurysm and AVM Center is the largest center in the Delaware Valley, with physicians who have evaluated and treated more than 5,000 patients with brain aneurysms and cerebral and spinal AVMs.

• The Division of Neuro-Oncologic Neurosurgery and Stereotactic Radiosurgery is dedicated to the surgical treatment of brain tumors. The goal of our Division is to cure brain tumors or, when cure is not possible, maximize both length and quality of life for each of our patients. All surgical techniques developed by members of the Division are designed to maximize therapeutic benefit while remaining safe and, when possible, are minimally invasive.
• Among surgical techniques that have been developed within the Division is the combined use of MRI with motor and/or speech corticography (an electrical procedure for accurate evaluation of lesional-functional activity). This has provided patients with safe and effective means of removing tumors near speech or motor function areas without harming these vital brain areas.

• Physicians of the Division of Neuroradiology/Head and Neck Radiology perform all the radiological and imaging procedures related to the nervous system, head, neck and spine. The Division has access to two high-field inpatient MR scanners, two 16-slice multidetector CT scanners, a myelography suite, reading rooms and staff offices. Additional outpatient equipment includes seven 1.5 T MRI units, two open MRI units and two additional CT scanners.
• Approximately 300 selective cerebral arteriograms, 200 myelograms and 16,000 CTs of the head and spine are performed each year in the Division. In addition, approximately 28,000 MRI scans of the head and spine are performed annually.
